THE PROBLEM

Black patients experience systemic disparities within the U.S. healthcare system

For these reasons and more, Doqta aims to address the health disparities that black patients face.

🚧Bias and discrimination

Implicit and explicit biases among healthcare providers can lead to unequal treatment, misdiagnosis, or under-treatment

🚗Healthcare access

Geographic barriers, such as living in areas with fewer healthcare facilities or providers, make it difficult to reliably transport

🏠Economic barriers

Lower median incomes can limit access to quality healthcare services and insurance coverage

🧠Mental health stigma

Cultural stigma around mental health may deter black patients from seeking help or result in less effective treatment

THE SOLUTION

Doqta is a startup that uses generative AI-driven community to support the health of black patients

Doqta aims to help black patients in every aspect of their health journey, from connecting with others to connecting with yourself. Since I can't share my in-depth solutions, here's a sneak peek!

THE DESIGNS

Designed 150+ screens and 250+ individual design system components from 0->1

After creating specifications, I handed off designs to the startup founder and the engineering team. Doqta is currently a work in progress being developed!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Key takeaways

This was my first time designing for an early-stage startup, but that made the experience way more educational!

🙋🏿  Don't be afraid to push back
Initially, I designed the app to align with the founder's vision. However, I soon recognized that as the designer, I had a valuable perspective on the app’s features and business model. I presented all ideas, questions, and concerns to the founder and we collaborated to incorporate them effectively.

🎨  Steal like an artist

Designing Doqta taught me so much about existing mobile patterns. Thanks to apps like Reddit, Facebook, and ChatGPT, I was able to discern how established products utilize information architecture, layout, and spacing to create effective user experiences.

📱  Creating a design system can go a long way

A design system was invaluable when I reached the high-fidelity stage, as I was able to quickly adapt to component-level changes and develop clear engineering specifications.
